camping
Ok, let’s get real. Bringing the family to the mountains for 4 days and 3 nights can be both a blessing and a burden. That said, knowledge is power, and the more you know about the environs and protocol of FloydFest camping, the greater the likelihood of the perfect family camping experience.
first, the basics
Camping at FloydFest is primitive, meaning no electricity, running water, perfectly level campsites, etc., Camping is allowed only in designated areas (basically, one large ‘camping field’ and the wooded perimeter of the festival site). Portable toilets, hand-washing stations and potable water are convenient to camping areas. Also, 8 warm-water shower stalls are located on the hill en-route to the Global Village. No open fires are permitted. Camp stoves are fine.
so who can camp?
Anyone with consecutive day tickets, meaning you’re coming for two, three, or four days. No cost involved-camping on site is included with the ticket price. Please do note, all general admission ticketholders park off-site at our Chateau Morisette parking lot and shuttle into the festival site. This does mean humping your gear from your car to the shuttle, and then again to your camping site. Although we do have tractor shuttles, hospitality golf carts, and smiling volunteers to assist you, please pack accordingly! Hint: Let the shuttle driver know your particular camping preferences, and he/she can help site you accordingly. Camping on the Eastern side of the campus offers close proximity to the main stage and Children’s Universe, and is the official location of “family camping.” Please be respectful of those with young children and/or early bedtimes. We suggest that night-owls head to the western slopes (“not so quiet camping”), where we continue to clear and level new camping spaces. Of course, woods camping everywhere fills up first, so be cautioned that you may end up in “filed camping” if you arrive late – bring tarps and sunscreen!
and now a word about timing
General admission campers may arrive on site beginning at 12:00 pm on Thursday. VIP and RV campers may come earlier, starting at 8am Thursday. On-Site RV ticket holders may arrive Wednesday, between 4pm and 9pm. While VIP and RV pass holders may drive directly onto the festival site, again, General admission weekend or consecutive day passholders park in the official offsite parking lot and ride the boy scout shuttle to the festival site.
so, who parks where again?
Parking on the festival site is limited to souvenir ticket package holders and those with an RV parking permit. Motorcycle parking is available adjacent to the main gate, and vehicles with handicapped plates or placard will be escorted to parking near the main stage. Regular ticket holder parking is conveniently located at the Chateau Morrisette parking area, a five minute shuttle ride from the FloydFest main gate. The directions on our directions page will take you directly to the Chateau Morrisette parking lot. 100% of the parking monies are given to local charities; the parking fee is $5/car/day or $10/car/weekend. No parking is allowed along the shoulder of the Blue Ridge Parkway, as this is designated Federal land.
General Camping Protocol
We all know how camping has changed over the past decade or so. Tents have gone from 'pup' to 'palatial and urban sprawl is an imminent threat to the woodsy scene. That said, please be a considerate camper. Keep your campsite compact, groups camping together should have a trap for group shelter and cooking and small tents for sleeping. We do not allow the saving of tent sites.. no roping off for friends coming on Saturday. Everything packed in should be packed out, including *all trash* and the folding chair that bites the dust, or the ping pong table on it's last leg- consider bringing a wagon to help with the effort. Please note that our camping areas are designated 'quiet,' 'not so quiet,' etc., and position yourself accordingly so as not to be a nuisance to your neighbor.
a word about our off-site park & camp site
For those who cannot imagine a long weekend without their vehicle, and who have missed the opportunity to purchase a ‘souvenir ticket’ (includes on-site parking), there are still options. Our recently added off-site-park-and-camp vehicle lot conveniently located along the shuttle route, just minutes from the festival site is open starting Thursday at 10am. We're happy about this expansion, and the ability to accommodate additional car-campers. Boy scout busses will begin shuttling from this lot at noon on Thursday, through 2am, with shuttles Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am-2am. There will be campground hosts on site to help you with any need that arises, and ice and bottled water for sale, as well as available potable water and portajohns. Sorry, there aren't showers, but you're welcome to shuttle to and from the festival site and use the showers there. You will be able to camp directly next to your vehicle in this lot, and camp stoves and normal camping apparatus are permitted $50 includes weekend parking and up to two tent sites. NO RV’s in this lot, please – for RV’ers who missed the on-site RV spaces, satellite RV parking is available in the Chateau Morisette parking lot for $100.
