Girls Rock Roanoke (GRR!) is a volunteer-run, community based organization in the Roanoke Valley. At Girls Rock Roanoke summer camp, girls ages 8-16 will form bands, write their own songs, and perform at a final Showcase. They also participate in workshops on women’s music history, Self defense, communicating with confidence, stage presence, teamwork, songwriting, tech talk, daily yoga and more. …Camps are one-week long, day camps. During lunchtime campers get to listen to guest music artists and have dance parties. Understanding that summer camp isn’t a possibility for everyone, we have now opened our year-round programming, Workshops!, that allow us to extend our camp workshops throughout the year to the Roanoke Valley.
Girls Rock Roanoke aims to support girls as they develop self-confidence, amplify their voices, and fully realize their power to make a difference in the world. Camp activities and volunteers create a nurturing space that fosters creativity, communication, collaboration, diversity, and inclusivity.
We also provide opportunities for GRR volunteers and staff to develop leadership, teaching and facilitation skills through their participation in GRR camps. For more information on volunteer opportunities, please contact us through Facebook or email.
Girls Rock Roanoke celebrates local Southwest Virginia talent by inviting area folks to lead workshops and perform for our campers. We hope that an additional outcome of Girls Rock Roanoke camps is increased public awareness of our local musicians, and an open and supportive environment for women in music.
Girls Rock Roanoke is open to all youths who identify as female, transgender, or gender non-conforming, regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, size and/or ability.
No musical experience or instruments are necessary to participate in our programs.
